John Swain found guilty on an indictment for a burglary in the dwelling house of William Hitchen in the parish of Finchingfield on 10^th March 1778: stealing therefrom 2 chocolate coloured cotton handkerchiefs (valued at 4/-), 2 pairs of men’s leather shoes (valued at 2/-), 2 pairs of women’s leather shoes (valued at 7/-), 4 pounds of tobacco (value at 12/-), 8 gold guineas, 1 gold half guinea, 1 silver sixpence and £6 in money numbered.
