James Smith murdered Sarah Isabella Cross in her shop on Hulme Hall Lane, Manchester.

he had beat her around the head with a number of bottles of mineral water that had been on the shelves. They had all been smashed about her body and lay in pieces. The back door was open and the police found a fingerprint on the fresh paint by the door which they traced to James Smith, however he denied ever being in Janes Smiths shop.

The police then reassambled all the bottles peice by piece and determined that five bits of glass found at James Smiths house were perfect matches for missing pieces.

The bits of glass and finger print were enough to convict him and he was hung on 28th November 1962.
