Valerie Coffre (aged 22) a Prisoner-of-War, guilty of the murder of Nicholas Chartier. It is reported that he asked Chartier a question about his complexion and on receiving an indecent answer, though jocularly given, he stabbed him with a large knife. He was taken from the County Gaol at 5 o’clock in the morning by postchaise to Porchester Castle where he was hanged.
