James Frank Rivett

James Frank Rivett murdered his girlfriend Christine Ruth Cuddon 17 who he strangled in a cycle shed at Sir John Leman School, Beccles on 5 November 1949. She was strangled with her head scarf.

At the trial he pleaded guilty but his councel pleaded not guilty for him against his will, pleading instead guilty but insane.

His 17 year old cousin said that 4 years earlier she had said she would be a brides maid at his wedding and he told her that he didnt expect to get married and that he would commit murder before he did that and be hung for it. The court heard that he had a preoccupation with an illformed fantasy of murder. The judge asked the jury to remember the difference between mad and bad.
