Andrew Brown robbed and murdered Amelia Knowles. She ran a second hand shop on 20 Tarrant Street, Arundel. Her battered  body was discovered the next day after neighbours noted that she hadnt taken in the milk.

The killer was soon tracked down as the neighbour at 24 Tarrant Street had seen a man in an RAF uniform hanging about on her doorstep the night before around midnight and she had asked him what he was doing there and when he left another RAF man had greeted him using the name Paddy. After asking at the nearby RAF base they discovered Paddy was Andrew Brown and that he had been spending freely with money he had said had been sent to him from Belfast.

At his trial he said that he had been passing her house and heard noises and so he went in to investigate and that Amelia Knowles attacked him, however, medical evidence indicated that the killer had knelt on the victim whilst carrying out the beating.
