William Kearsley and Elijah Winstanley murdered Robert Kidd. They were both sentenced to death but William Kearsley was reprieved.
William Kearsley, Elijah Winstanley and another man had been drinking in a pub after which they went to goods siding near Chapel Lane, Wigan where they started to plunder from some wagons. They were caught by Robert Kidd and another man who were railway detectives but they over powered them and beat them up killing Robert Kidd and seriously injurring the other. After the attack Elijah Winstanley said 'I dont think the man I got agate of will live'.
