Charles Bartlett murdered his mother-in-law Mary Lewis at Stapleton on 10 September 1836. He shot her in Lippiatts Lane with a pistol at close range in order to recieve her inheritance.
Mary Lewis had been to Bath in relation to a letter concerning Charles Bartlett and a robbery. They were later seen walking together towards Stapleton and going into the Masons Arms at Stapleton. They were later seen walking into Lippiatts Lane were the report of firearms was heard and the body of Mary Lewis was found stripped of her gown and with powder marks on her bonnet proving that she was shot at close range. Charles Bartlett had soon after been seen running towards Bristol.
