Evan Hugh Jones in the parish of Llanfair (Caereinion) on 4 February 1735 assaulted John Rea with an axe made of iron and wood (value 6d) striking and wounding on the right side of his head and throat so that he instantly died: Margaret Jones was present aiding and abetting him and giving comfort and assistance : There is a second indictment similarly phrased dealing with their murder of John Barley on 24 June 1734. Both pleaded guilty to both murders (Indictment in WALES 4/178/4 at University of Wales, Library, Aberystwyth). Additional information from notes on gibbets in “Bygones relating to Wales and the Border Counties” "At Coed in the parish of Manafon 1.75 miles South of Llanfair Caereinion an inn or post house was kept by a couple named Lloyd who murdered their guests and buried them in the woods. At last convicted at Montgomery Assize they were hanged and their bodies hanged in chains on a hill near their former residence: the gibbet was an oak tree" (1891/92 p.299). "Among their victims was a Scotch peddler" (1891/92 p.332). "Ivan a Marged Huw Sion (Evan son of Hugh Jones and wife Margaret) murdered a hawker and buried him at Gwerglodd y pum Bedd (meadow of the five graves): after execution their bodies were brought by cart and gibbeted on the common at the top of the hill" (1901 p.25). There is also a reference in the Gentleman's Magazine August 1735.
