Piosoned his wife and mother-in-law with antimony. Whilst there was suspision because of the amount of time it took his wife to die his crimes were not detected until after they were buried when an anonymous letter was sent to the police and the bodies exhumed. They were then found to contain antimony which is a mineral based poison that is less readily dissolved.

His hanging was attended by more than 80,000 people and was the last public execution in Scotland.
