Arthur Birkett murdered his ex-girlfriend Alice Beetham 18 whose throat he cut at Jubilee Mill, Gate Street, Blackburn on 20 May, 1912.

He murdered her at Jubille Mill where they were both weavers just after breakfast. He followed her into the mill and then grabbed her from behind slashing her throat with a razor.

After sentencing he wrote to his mother saying that he was glad he was going to die, and even if he had the choice between 5 years and death he would choose death as he wouldnt want to live without Alice. He asked his mother to visit alices grave as often as she would of his and think of them together. He said that he hoped alice would forgive him and that they would be together in heaven.
