Joseph Wren murdered John Collins 3 who he strangled and cut his throat on a slag heap, near Queen's Park pit, Burnley on 28 December 1909.

Joseph Wren who was formerly a stoker in the Navy was unable to find work and had told his brother that he meant to go back to prison for five to six years, even if it meant committing murder. Later that day he was see carrying John Collins away and after he murdered him he went to the police and told them.
