August 22nd: Thomas HAYNES (40)
Cork
A farmer from Inneshannon, County Cork, convicted of the murder of his wife Ellen on 25 March. During a drunken quarrel he stabbed her several times, and as she lay bleeding on the ground he proceeded to kick her to death. Haynes made a vain attempt to cheat the gallows by trying to cut his own throat before he was hanged by two local men. Their identities were kept secret, and they were offered the appointment after Marwood failed to arrive at the prison.
