Fenton was a silversmith at Birmingham. and had become engaged to Florence Elbrough. a barmaid. To impress her. he exaggerated about his financial status. and as a result she kept on at him to buy some nev, furniture for their house. She eventually challenged him as to why he was so reluctant to spend any money and during a quarrel, he shot her dead and then turned the gun on himself, but failed in his suicide attempt.
