1893
April 4th: Edward HEMMINGS (26)
Leeds
A collier from Normanton, convicted of the murder of his wife at Handsworth, near Sheffield, on 16 February. They had married in September but he soon became very jealous of her talking to any other men. They moved to new lodgings and immediately he was jealous when she became very friendly with several of the lodgers at the house. In a rage, he killed her as she slept, attacking her with an axe and then cutting her throat. He fled from the house and discarded the axe which police later found under a railway arch. He was arrested at Normanton, and after conviction he left a full confession. Hanged by James Billington.
