George Nicholson murdered his wife Mary Ann Nicholson at their home in Birmingham on 22 September 1888. They had had an argument and he had hit her over the head with a hatchet. Mary  Nicholson was found dead in a chair.

After killing her George Nicholson took her watch and pawned it and then fled to Walsall where he was arrested. He denied that he was George Nicholson but a pawn ticket found on him tied him to the watch which was, like his clothes, blood stained.

A witness had said that George Nicholson had spoken to him about the Whitechapel murders saying that they were nothing in to what he would do on those at home before the day was out.
