Convicted on overwhelming evidence at Chelmsford Assizes on 10 November for the murder of a young married woman with whom he lodged at Dagenham. After sentence was passed, he confessed that he had killed the woman, a Mrs Rogers, by cutting her throat with a razor he had found in her bedroom, but denied that when he had entered the room he had intended to kill her.
